Steal An Egg Mutation Consumable: 400 Boss Tokens & Fractured

The Steal An Egg mutation consumable is the Boss Shop's 10% item at 400 Boss Tokens. How to earn the tokens and apply it to a placed, unhatched egg.

What is the Mutation Consumable in Steal An Egg?

The Mutation Consumable is an item sold in the Boss Shop, the vendor that arrived with Update #3, Rifts, and takes Boss Tokens as its currency. It is the item most players are looking for when they search for a “mutation shard” or a “mutation crystal” — the shop listing documented in current gameplay guides reads “10% Mutation Consumable,” priced at 400 Boss Tokens.

Two facts sit at the centre of the item:

  • It is tied to the Fractured Mutation. The official Rifts changelog says the Boss Shop includes a way to apply the new Fractured Mutation to eggs you have already placed.
  • It is used before the hatch. The consumable goes onto a placed, still-unhatched egg — not onto a pet you have already hatched.

This wiki recorded the same 400-token price in day-one launch footage of the shop, which showed four items: a treadmill booster, 1.2x speed, a cash booster and a mutation consumable at 400 tokens — see the Rifts update page. That price is the best-corroborated detail on this page. The consumable’s exact effect was never explained on camera, and the “10% Mutation Consumable” label itself comes from third-party guide screenshots rather than a first-party item description, so both are marked [Unconfirmed].

Where does the “Mutation Shard” name come from?

Nowhere official. Mutation Shard is a fast-rising player search term, and the item’s purple, crystal-like appearance is why some guides describe it as a mutation crystal — but “Mutation Shard” is not the name currently shown in the Boss Shop. If you searched for it, the item you are looking for is the Mutation Consumable. Do not treat “Mutation Shard” as a confirmed in-game item name unless the game itself starts using that wording.

How do you get the Mutation Consumable?

  1. Enter a Rift. Rift portals open across the map on a recurring schedule, most often at the farthest biomes you have unlocked. The Rifts update page records the cycle — portals open roughly every 30 minutes — and the two phases of the boss fight.
  2. Defeat the Abyss Overlord. Clearing the Rift boss encounter awards Boss Tokens. The quoted ceiling is 1,500 per kill, and the current Rift guides report roughly 1,200–1,500 Boss Tokens per successful clear. That range is guide-reported rather than a published payout formula, so treat it as [Unconfirmed].
  3. Bank 400 Boss Tokens — the recorded price of the consumable.
  4. Buy it in the Boss Shop and take it to an egg you have already placed at your base.
  5. Apply it while the egg is still waiting to hatch. The update’s wording refers to placed eggs, and current guides show the consumable being used before the hatch completes.

The Rift boss loop is the only recorded source of Boss Tokens, so the bottleneck is boss runs rather than the purchase: at the low end of the reported range, one clear covers the item with tokens left over.

What does the “10%” in the item name mean?

This is the part nobody has confirmed. The shop listing is shown as a “10% Mutation Consumable”, but the official Rifts changelog does not separately explain what the 10% represents, and the two community readings conflict:

ReadingWhat it would meanStatus
Extra incomeFractured adds 10% money gain on top of the pet’s rateCommunity guide reading; [Unconfirmed]
Application chanceThe consumable has a 10% chance of applying the mutationCommunity reference reading; [Unconfirmed]

Because those two explanations disagree, neither should be presented as an official rule. What is supported today is narrower: the recorded item label, the 400 Boss Token price, the Boss Shop as the source, and the link to Fractured Mutation. The meaning of “10%” is not confirmed, and no success rate for the item has been published.

Does the consumable work on an egg that has already hatched?

No. Every recorded description of the item points at a placed, unhatched egg. The update’s wording refers to applying Fractured to placed eggs, and current guides show it being used while the hatch is still pending. Once your egg has produced a pet, this item is not the tool for it — mutations that land on a living pet come from a different path, which the mutations guide maps out.

Which egg should you spend 400 Boss Tokens on?

Not the first weak egg you find. The recorded advice is to save the consumable, because it costs a full Boss Shop purchase and the mutation it applies does not come back off. Two rules follow from what the collected sources actually support:

  • Spend it on an egg you intend to keep. The item is applied before the hatch, so the pet inside the egg is exactly the pet you end up with.
  • Spend it where a mutation matters most. A mutation multiplies income separately from rarity and size, which is why a mutated mid-tier pet can out-earn a plain higher-rarity one — the mutations guide works through that stacking.

The same logic shows up in Update 4’s fusion route: the recorded preparation step for the once-per-account secret room includes applying mutation consumables to the pet you plan to carry in, so the item is spent on a pet whose fate is already decided — see the Skeleton Horse page. No collected source publishes a mutation probability or a multiplier for that route, so choose the pet first and treat any percentage quoted for it as unverified.

Is this the same as the Sakura Incubator mutation?

No. Steal An Egg has more than one way to mutate an egg, and the two routes are not interchangeable:

RouteSourceResultUnlock
Mutation ConsumableBoss Shop; 400 Boss TokensFractured MutationUpdate #3 Rifts
Sakura IncubatorCherry Blossom zoneBloom or rare Spirit BloomA sacrificed Crane

The incubator is tied to the endgame Cherry Blossom zone and its Crystal event, while the consumable is tied to the Rift boss loop — so a player who can farm the Abyss Overlord but has never reached Cherry Blossom can still mutate an egg. Which route is better value depends on numbers neither side publishes: the developer has released no official multipliers for Fractured, Bloom or Spirit Bloom.

What is still unconfirmed?

  • The meaning of “10%” — an income boost or an application chance; the two community readings conflict.
  • Fractured Mutation’s exact effect — the changelog confirms the mutation exists but publishes no multiplier.
  • The Boss Token payout formula — 1,500 per kill is the quoted ceiling, and 1,200–1,500 is guide-reported rather than developer-published.
  • The full Boss Shop catalog — only four items were observed in launch footage, which is a partial list.
  • The item’s official name — “10% Mutation Consumable” comes from guide screenshots, and “Mutation Shard” is a player search term.

Steal An Egg Mutation Consumable: FAQ

How many Boss Tokens does the Mutation Consumable cost?

  1. That price was recorded in day-one Boss Shop footage and is repeated by current gameplay guides, which makes it the best-corroborated detail about the item.

Can I use the Mutation Consumable after hatching the egg?

No recorded description supports that. It is applied to a placed, unhatched egg, and the update’s own wording refers to placed eggs.

Is the Mutation Consumable the same as a Mutation Shard?

Almost certainly — “Mutation Shard” appears to be a player search name for the purple, crystal-like Boss Shop consumable rather than an official item name. [Unconfirmed]

Does the Mutation Consumable guarantee a Fractured pet?

No source publishes a success rate, and the conflicting readings of the “10%” label are precisely why you should not assume a guaranteed outcome.

Is the Mutation Consumable a code reward?

No. Steal An Egg has never shipped a redemption system — the codes page logs every check — so nothing in the Boss Shop, this item included, arrives by code.
